TROUT | Comments :

Our quest to discover the hidden art in catching the perfect trout has taken us far and wide, from interviewing Gollum himself to the arduous task of translating the Kingfisher's scriptures as found on the riverside perches where they once had a trout catching conference in 1628. We, however, found that the best advice came from our very own bass playing dynamo, Norwegian born Tord Overland Knudsen whose first word was 'ørret' ('trout' in English) and whose first toy was a fishing rod. So here's our 4 step guide to landing that perfect trout...
1. You can access Norway from most good airports or harbours if you fancy a more adventurous stow-away-style journey. On arrival to Oslo (that's the capital of Norway) take the 'Trysil Ekspress' from Gardermoen Airport to Elverum (incidentally Tord's hometown) and within 2hrs you'll be scouring for a B&B in Norway's best kept secret. The best time to go is mid June-September as the river Glomma is free from ice in the summer and there will be trout a- plenty!
2. No fisherman is complete without a trip to Mr. Hagen's Sports Shop on Storgata in the heart of Elverum's bustling little town. He will kit you out in some waist high wellies, a special jacket with no arms and lots of pockets and a fishing hat for good luck. Your pockets will be filled with a selection of homemade flies (the little fishies go wild for those brightly coloured bad boys!),a heavy float and all the other necesseties you will need including the rod, line etc. Just ask Mr. Hagen if in doubt and all will become clear!
3. So your ready to go? Not quite. This is where the DIY element comes into play. Traditional 'fly fishing' takes a lot of patience and years to master but the beauty with the Wombat way is that anyone can do it. You simply take a normal, bog standard fishing rod, put 2 flies on the line roughly 1ft apart from each other and make a knot to keep them from slipping. Attach a float at the end of the line about 2ft away from the closest fly and you're nearly ready to go.
4. Location is always important and fortunately Tord has a spot that he has successfully caught monsterously large trout at from when he was knee high to a grasshopper. It's a little beaver infested island just near Dørum Farm but be careful not to trespass as farmer Dørum has a salt pellet shotgun to bruise anyone brave enough to try their luck on his land. If you make it safely through Dørum's fields you will then have to wade across the Glomma (the waist high wellies come in handy here) to the small island and it is on the far side, about 200metres across, that you will find the sacred spot. That's it! You've made it. Now all that's left to do is to throw out your line, keep it taut by constantly reeling it in and watch the float so you can see when that trout bites! Good luck..you're gonna need it!x
Tord's Top Tips:
1. Get the 'homemade green glomma special' fly from Mr. Hagen for sure fire success! 2. Keep an eye out for the fishing police as you need a permit but don't worry I never had one. Just make sure to leg it as fast as you can with your trout safely under your arm!! 3. Cooking the trout couldn't be easier. Just disembowel it,wrap it in tin foil, sprinkle some salt and pepper on and slap it on the BBQ. A nice potato salad is the perfect companion for trout and you need look no further than Dorum's Farm for a few five finger discounted spuds!
